My Marketing Internship at The Creative Collective – Holly Oldham

In the third year of my communications degree, I was beginning to reconsider my chosen major: journalism. I concluded I needed to see what else was in the communications world, so I started looking into marketing internships. 

Fast forward six months, life prompted me to take a break from uni and return to my hometown of Newcastle, where I discovered The Creative Collective and their incredible internship program. I applied immediately and was lucky to secure a 100-hour internship over 6 weeks in the Newcastle office. 

Here are just a few of the things I learnt during my time with The Creative Collective Team: 

Variety

Going into this internship, I didn’t know what I didn’t know about the marketing world. I walked in on my first day with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised at how diverse and all-encompassing the field is. 

The Creative Collective has local, national and international clientele in fields like healthcare, tourism, beauty, disability support, law and construction. As well as this, the company has to maintain their own brand and social media presence to ensure they are staying relevant and bringing in new clients. 

Throughout the internship, I was given tasks in social media planning and content creation, copywriting, website optimisation, and SEO research and implementation. I attended internal training sessions with TCC founder Yvette and I was able to sit in on client meetings that allowed me to gain insight into client needs and the problem-solving skills required in a professional setting. No two days were the same!

New Programs 

During my marketing internship, I learnt and developed my skill sets in software and communication tools like the Google Suite, Active Campaign, Loomly, Google Analytics, Canva and Capcut. 

Before working with The Creative Collective, I didn’t have experience with many of these tools. It was amazing to gain hands-on experience utilising them in a professional context, and I now feel confident using them going forward in my professional career. 

Confidence 

Going into this internship I was apprehensive, with no experience in the marketing world. This anxiety disappeared when I walked into my first day and met the amazing team in the Newcastle office. Everyone was so welcoming and open to questions, that I immediately felt more at ease.

I was so lucky to be in the capable hands of Marcie. She was my mentor throughout the 6 weeks and I couldn’t be more thankful. Her knowledge and guidance allowed me to relax into the role and start completing tasks independently and with confidence, knowing she was there if I needed assistance or feedback. 

With this confidence, I produced a range of content for The Creative Collective, and their clients. I honed my copywriting skills through multiple blogs, industry pages and EDM’s. I will say, it’s a special moment when you see your writing go live on a website for the first time!  

Would I Recommend this Experience? 

In short? Absolutely! 

The Creative Collective has developed an in-depth and customisable marketing internship program that allowed me to explore the field, and gain invaluable skills I will use throughout my career.

I am so thankful to the team who were always available for support and feedback, and I couldn’t recommend the program enough!
