Gutenberg is the WordPress page builder you will learn to love

Initially when you mention the word Gutenberg you may think of an old German Geezer with a large amount of facial hair. Well you are partly correct…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][gem_quote style=”1″]Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg was a German blacksmith, goldsmith, inventor, printer, and publisher who introduced printing to Europe with the printing press.”[/gem_quote][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”39359″ img_size=”475×500″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Now this is quite a large feat for someone born in the 1400s.…  HE IS BACK!

Though after much excitement and/or an announcement has been made to keep us waiting.

The WordPress 5.0 release date has shifted from the 27th of November to give more time for the RC to be fully tested. A final release date will be announced soon, based on feedback on the RC.

In case you have been under a rock or simply don’t pay as much attention to WordPress blogs (which is highly possible as not everyone is into website as us geeks at The Creative Collective are), 26% of websites are built on WordPress.

The next WordPress update WordPress 5.0 is going to be the most controversial and or brilliant transition since WordPress was founded by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little in 2003, with the injection of Gutenberg page builder into the WordPress dashboard.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1543315601340{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”39351″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

What is this Gutenberg?

In brief, Gutenberg is a page editor in which uses “blocks”. If you have ever used other page editors you will know it is the way things are heading. Currently, the page editor is very clunky and if you are ever wanting to have a page in 2 columns you have to work with css coding or short codes, in which most don’t do what you want anyway.

I already have my website built I don’t want to change

Don’t worry friend, the Gutenberg page editor can actually be turned off and you can still continue to use your page as per normal whilst still enjoying the benefits of having the updated WordPress.

Gutenberg has been tested over the years and all the bugs have been trailed and fixed however there are still some usability limitations.

There are some problems with adding images within blocks, padding and styling. But overall it is so much easier to quickly mockup a page if you are in a hurry.

What to be aware of in Gutenberg

Older Theme may not work – Gutenberg blocks output content using HTML 5 tags so the css of the themes cannot work with this, mostly effecting padding and margins and Gutenberg doesn’t have its own stylesheet to accommodate for this.

Future Proofing – The use of HTML 5 means that your website is up to date and uses the most current code

No Short codes – Short code cannot be executed in text block they need to be added in short code blocks.

No images or other embeds in paragraphs – In Gutenberg, you can’t wrap text around an image. Images and embeds have their own blocks.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”39352″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
