Finding your querencia (and getting your business mojo back)

Finding your querencia (and getting your business mojo back)

It’s relentless being a business owner. And then there’s crazy people like me who decide to run three businesses simultaneously (www.thecreativecollective.com.au, thetrainingcollective.com.au and awardshub.com), and have 2 kids, and write a book (nokidding.com.au) and do a heap of speaking and promotion around that.

It’s all fun and games… until your mojo starts running a bit low. And when you’re the captain of a decently sized ship, the journey must continue. But how do you go on if you’re running low on fuel. How do you rally the troops when you could do with a little rallying yourself?

Yes I’m being blatantly honest and sharing that even I have low vibe days, and sometimes feel like I’ve lost my mojo.

But what’s important to discuss here is not about losing it, but how to get it back, and quick!

Everybody is different and that’s what makes the world such a wonderful place.

But I figure if I share what works for me, it might be helpful to you if you find yourself in the same predicament. So here’s six things that tend to work for me when my feet are dragging:

1. Go search some motivational quotes on the internet or on Pinterest – whether you’ve used it before or not, do yourself a favour and head over to pinterest. Type into the search bar ‘quotes’ or ‘motivational quotes’ or any other combinations of keywords and scroll through until you find a quote which resonates with you. Look at it. Stare at it. Make it your screensaver or wallpaper. Share it. Just connect with it. Or, create your own! I love using Wordswag or Over to make mine on my iPhone. Sometimes getting the creative juices going is therapy in itself.

2. Connect with nature – Nature is an incredible healer and you should never under estimate the power of walking bare foot on the earth,… a minimum of 10 minutes – 30 minutes a day. It will… greatly assist in balancing the body and reducing stress. This can… even be as simple as sitting outside on a chair with your shoes off and feet on the grass. Have a look… at what Dr. William Rossi has to say about our feet:

“The sole (or plantar surface) of the foot is richly covered with some 1,300 nerve endings per square
inch. That’s more than found on any other part of the body of comparable size. Why are so many
nerve endings concentrated there? To keep us ‘in touch’ with the Earth. The real physical world
around us. It’s called ‘sensory response.’ The foot is the vital link between the person and the Earth.
The paws of all animals are equally rich in nerve endings. The Earth is covered with an
electromagnetic layer. It’s this that creates the sensory response in our feet and the paws of animals.
Try walking barefoot on the ground for a couple of minutes. Every living thing, including human
beings, draws energy from this field through its feet, paws, or roots.”

3. Arrange to spend time with a friend who really gets you. A friend who is a radiator, not a drainer and who brings out the best on you and doesn’t just go on about themselves all the time. A friend who can listen. You may or may not have this friend close. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone, or dial up on Skype, just to hear their voice. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.

4. Have a bath, get in a spa, or go for a swim or a surf – there’s equally something therapeutic about water, at least for me there is. I’m a real water baby, and as soon as I’m submerged I can feel my cares washing away.

5. Make a delicious meal with real love and attention put into it for other people. Or go out and be served on. Take your time and really enjoy the meal. Engage in some good conversations and even a little wine that might get the creative juices going again (but not too much that will leave you hungover and in an even worse spot than where you began!)

6. Do some yoga or meditation – Even if you’re no expert on the matter, there are some fantastic apps and YouTube clips that you can access for free and follow, even if you are a first timer. If you are in business for yourself and go a million miles and hour, some gentle relaxation exercises might be enough to still the mind and top up the mojo!

7. Do a good deed – Go and help at an orphanage. Serve some food at a soup kitchen. Sometimes by finding the energy to give, you get so much back in return.

8. Book a holiday or arrange a trip to somewhere you are familiar with and where you know makes you feel good – You know there is this excellent Spanish word (I speak Spanish) for which there is no English equivalent – querencia, hence the title of my post. Where is the place that you can draw strength from? Where is the place you feel like your authentic self?

My querencia is New Zealand – … my homeland. The moment I get off the plane in Aotearoa (it’s Maori namesake), I can feel my creative juices flowing. It’s all so familiar and grounding.

I hope you found this helpful, and that you find your querencia, and mojo, real soon!
