Local men on track in their weight loss quest

The aim was to get 20 overweight men on board but now 30 guys keen to drop some kilos have officially enlisted themselves for the 2020 Weight Loss Challenge which was launched just last month, with several others ‘unofficially' participating too.

All are consistently losing at least a kilo a week, and some are electing to get serious by engaging personal trainers from Beach House Fitness, the Challenge's dietician Sally Livock and health advice from medical practice Medicine on Second.

“The great thing I've seen from those who have come to me is that they are being sensible about making sustainable change. They're not seeing it as a quick fix – we all know they don't work and leave you fatter – but rather as an opportunity to improve their health,” says the Challenge's dietician, Sally Livock.

Beach House Fitness's manager Jeff May has implemented a series of fitness tips which go out on a weekly basis to the participants to keep them on the ball. “Sometimes it can be just that little reminder that get you back on track,” he says.

All participants are trying to lose 20 kilos in just 20 weeks whilst raising cash for charity.

For every kilo any of the participants do not lose in the 20 week period, a fee of $100 per kilo will be paid to the challenges nominated charities with 50% going to the Berachah Orphanage in Machilipatnam in India and 50% going to Michael Ryan's wife's charity Maggies Dream Catcher, who are currently raising funds to build a hospital in Dharamasala, India.

If participants do achieve their 20 kilo goal within the 20 week period, they will still donate a $200 participation fee towards the nominated charities.

The first weigh in since the Challenge began will be held this Friday 14th March at 12pm at the Wine Bar, First Avenue, Maroochydore and media are welcome to attend.

“The launch was like a last supper with lots of us indulging in our usual multi-course meal and plenty of alcohol. But now we're on the straightened arrow a lunch out will prove to be a good challenge as we all try to make healthy choices. It'll make a nice change from the Lean Cuisine's I've been sticking to though!” jokes Michael Ryan, one of the driving forces behind the challenge.
